K.R.C. Genk suffered a disappointing away defeat in the Jupiler Pro League against OH Leuven on Sunday. Wouter Vrancken's team conceded two late goals and fell to a 2-0 loss.
The first half was short on chances, but the game turned shortly after the break. In the 54th minute, Genk defender Federico Ricca turned a cross from the home side into his own net. That set the tone for a frustrating afternoon. Genk had 57 percent of possession but failed to translate that dominance into goals. Only two of their twelve shots were on target.
The statistics tell a story of inefficiency. Genk created fifteen scoring opportunities to Leuven's twelve, but their finishing was lacking. The team hit the woodwork three times and were awarded three penalties, but converted none of them. Their shot accuracy was a mere thirteen percent. The home side made sure of the points twenty minutes from time. Siebe Schrijvers converted a penalty, after Genk had collected a total of five yellow cards for 21 fouls. In the dying seconds, Ewoud Pletinckx headed home the 2-0 to seal the win for Leuven.
This defeat cost Genk valuable points in the league. At the time, the team was in mid-table. Today, in the 2026/27 season, K.R.C. Genk sits in seventh place with eight points from five matches. Recent form has been mixed with two wins, two draws and one loss in their last five league games. The team has scored twelve goals and conceded eight.
Aside from the poor finishing, the high foul count stood out. Genk committed 21 fouls, leading to five yellow cards. OH Leuven received two. The Limburgers did force four corners and blocked five shots, but it wasn't enough to change the outcome. The last five head-to-head meetings, incidentally, went Genk's way three times, to Leuven once, and ended in a draw once.
For manager Vrancken, this is a setback to quickly overcome. The next task is a home match against league leaders Gent, a direct rival. That game is scheduled for Sunday, September 13th.
