Noah Adedeji-Sternberg has reconnected with K.R.C. Genk on a sporting level. The winger received applause from the home fans when he came off the bench last weekend at the Cegeka Arena, following weeks of whistles due to his desired move to Club Brugge.
Analyst Steven Defour, speaking with Het Belang van Limburg, understands the player's motivation. "Veel viel die jongen niet te verwijten. Club Brugge staat nu eenmaal hoger aangeschreven dan Genk," Defour said. He noted that Club Brugge plays in the Champions League every year and fights for the title each season, explaining the attraction.
In June, it emerged that Adedeji-Sternberg had an agreement with Club Brugge and wanted to transfer. The blue-and-black club made a bid of six million euros, but K.R.C. Genk refused to grant the player's wish. Head of football Dimitri De Condé and the club management did not want to sell him to a direct rival. "Ik begrijp het heel goed dat Genk hem niet voor 6 miljoen naar een Belgische concurrent wilde laten gaan," Defour confirmed. Talks between the clubs ultimately broke down and the move was called off.
The player therefore remained at Genk and appears to be refocusing. His substitute appearance and the milder fan reaction indicate he can concentrate on his role. Wouter Vrancken's team currently sits ninth in the Jupiler Pro League with nine points from six matches. Their recent form is unbeaten with two wins and three draws in the last five league games. The next fixture is a top-of-the-table clash against that same Club Brugge, who are third, on September 20. The full schedule and current standings are available online. For Adedeji-Sternberg, this offers a chance to prove his worth on the pitch and fully regain the supporters' trust. His contract with K.R.C. Genk runs for several more seasons.
