K.R.C. Genk land Nigerian striker Rafiu Durosinmi on four-year deal

K.R.C. Genk have completed the signing of Nigerian striker Rafiu Durosinmi. The 23-year-old joined the Belgian club on Thursday, putting pen to paper on a four-year contract that runs until 2030 at the Cegeka Arena.

The move is Genk’s second acquisition of the summer transfer window. Durosinmi arrives from Italian side Pisa SC after a standout spell in the Czech Republic with FC Viktoria Plzeň. At Plzeň, he scored 35 goals and provided 10 assists in 86 appearances across all competitions. His professional career now stands at 54 goals and 17 assists in 150 official matches.

Why did Durosinmi choose Genk?

Genk sees Durosinmi as the ideal profile to lead their attack. The club describes him as a complete centre-forward with physical presence, aerial strength and clinical finishing. His ability to hold up play and link with teammates aligns with Genk’s football philosophy.

Dimitri de Condé, Genk’s Head of Football, highlighted the striker’s qualities. “Rafiu is a striker whose qualities fit perfectly with the way K.R.C. Genk want to play,” De Condé said. “He’s a real presence in the penalty area, technically strong and links up well with his teammates. We were looking for a profile that could make an immediate impact and help us compete at the top again.”

The influence of Paul Onuachu

A key factor in Durosinmi’s decision was the recommendation of Nigerian teammate Paul Onuachu. The Super Eagles striker previously starred for Genk before moving abroad. According to the club, Durosinmi sought Onuachu’s advice, who spoke highly of Genk’s culture, supporters and commitment to player development.

Durosinmi admitted those conversations solidified his choice. “Paul told me how good it is here,” he said. “The club gives players every chance to grow and the fans are always behind the team. That makes Genk special.”

What does this mean for Genk?

With Durosinmi added to the attack, Genk head into the new season with renewed firepower. The club is targeting domestic and European success, and the Nigerian’s European experience and proven goal-scoring record make him a valuable asset.

Genk’s Jupiler Pro League campaign kicks off next month. The arrival of Durosinmi is a major step in the club’s ambitions to challenge at the top of Belgian football.
