KRC Genk executed a deliberate transfer strategy this summer, focusing on quick offensive reinforcements followed by financial flexibility from sales. CEO Peter Croonen explained the plan this week in an interview.
"We had a clear plan: we chose to act very quickly on the offensive front and immediately deployed significant resources there," said Croonen. The club brought in forward Rafiu Durosinmi, midfielder Magnus Erenbjerg, and forward Afriyie early in the transfer window. Those investments came before clarity on potential outgoing transfers.
The club kept its financial planning deliberately open. The transfer of El Ouahdi became clear later, while the sale of Karetsas followed a different timeline. The substantial fee Liverpool paid for goalkeeper Brughmans ultimately provided the necessary leeway. "The substantial sum, which Liverpool also had available for Brughmans, ultimately gave us the space to push through on other positions as well," the CEO explained. That income made it possible to further balance the team later in the summer.
The strategy is intended to improve on-pitch performances. Genk currently sits tenth in the Jupiler Pro League with nine points from seven matches. The signing Durosinmi has proven immediately valuable and tops the club's scoring chart with five goals.
The team is in action on Saturday, October 10th at home against Kortrijk, an opportunity to turn around recent form following the 3-0 defeat to Club Brugge.
