K.R.C. Genk received a harsh reality check on Saturday night with a 3-0 defeat at Club Brugge. The loss painfully exposed the current struggles of the Limburg-based side.
Manager Jess Thorup was blunt in his assessment afterwards. "9 out of 21? The table doesn't lie," he said, referencing the meagre haul of nine points from seven league games. That leaves Genk tenth in the Jupiler Pro League, already ten points behind leaders Union St. Gilloise. "You can come up with a lot of excuses, but it simply has to be better," the coach added.
The match got away from Genk early. Carlos Forbs opened the scoring for Club Brugge after fifteen minutes. After the break, Lee Han-beom and Brandon Mechele added goals to put the game to bed. Genk did create chances, including an early opportunity for Noah Adedeji-Sternberg and a dangerous combination between Rafiu Durosinmi and Jeppe Erenbjerg, but the finishing touch was missing. Striker Durosinmi, with five goals in six appearances, remains the most productive forward this season.
Thorup explained the team is still searching for balance. "In the first three games we conceded too many goals, so we tried to focus more on the defensive side." he analysed. The recent form of one win, three draws and one loss (LDDWD) illustrates that instability. The manager said he wanted to get to work immediately, but the international break disrupts those plans. "With all the internationals, there's unfortunately not much to practice."
Focus now shifts to the run of games after the international break, with home fixtures against Kortrijk, Standard and KV Mechelen. That trio of matches offers a chance to repair the damage, according to Thorup. "We need a series of victories," he stressed. The full schedule for that period can be found on our fixtures page. The squad will also need to rely on the return of some injured players, whose status can be tracked via injuries.
The 35 million euro transfer of goalkeeper Lucca Brughmans to Liverpool has boosted the club's coffers but also created disruption. Genk is in a transitional phase, and the results reflect that. The next test, against Kortrijk on October 10th, must mark the start of a new path. Kortrijk currently sit sixteenth in the table.
